Mary Lucy Calisaya Serrano, a 5th-grade high school student at the Colegio de Alto Rendimiento (COAR) Puno, will travel to NASA.
The outstanding student was selected among more than 1,400 girls by the "She is Astronaut" program of the She is foundation to be part of the Peruvian delegation that will visit the NASA Space Center in Houston, United States.
For 4 months, the student delegation will have the opportunity to participate in a hybrid educational program with virtual classes on empowerment, social entrepreneurship, webinars with astronauts from the Space Center, among other activities.
At the end of the virtual stage, the students will travel for a week to the facilities of the world's largest space operations center.
There, they will attend talks on robotics, programming, rocket construction, mission organization and teamwork, lunar habitat creation, flight direction, and space travel simulation.
As part of their activities, they will develop a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) entrepreneurship and social innovation project that solves a problem in their communities.
"Since I was very young, I have felt a passion and interest in science and technology. For me, this is a great opportunity to learn and help solve the problems in my community. I want to encourage girls to get more involved in these topics," said Mary.
This program is recognized worldwide and aims to empower girls and turn them into agents of change in their communities by providing them with the opportunity to live an unforgettable experience and inspire them to make the impossible possible.
What is the "She is Astronaut" program?
This program, in partnership with the NASA Space Center, has been aiming since 2019 to strengthen the skills and capabilities of girls and adolescents between the ages of 11 and 16.
It is aimed at those in vulnerable conditions, motivating and inspiring their life projects.
