After a spectacular victory, 25-year-old Peruvian fighter Kevin Borjas has secured his entry into the world's premier mixed martial arts league: the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
On Tuesday night, Borjas defeated Brazilian Víctor Dias by unanimous decision in the Contender Series, becoming one of the five fighters to earn a UFC contract at the event. The flyweight (57 kg) bout saw Borjas showcase his grit in the second and third rounds, securing a 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 victory over the 32-year-old Brazilian competitor.
Dias entered the fight with a five-fight win streak, adding pressure to the young Peruvian. Under the nickname 'Gallo Negro' (Black Rooster), Borjas impressed both the audience and UFC President Dana White with his fighting style. "I'm very excited about this; we're already in the big leagues," celebrated Borjas.
FIVE PERUVIANS IN THE UFC
Renzo Altuna, an MMA specialist from the Finis portal, shared his thoughts on the Peruvian fighter's performance. "He had an outstanding performance, showing aggressive striking from the get-go and solid defense against his opponent's submission attempts," commented Altuna to El Comercio.
With Kevin Borjas' contract, there are now five Peruvians affiliated with the UFC, potentially joining its fight cards at any moment. This undoubtedly strengthens Peru's presence in the global sports scene and sets a precedent for future talents.
In an interview with the UFC he stated: "I'm very excited. I'm already in the UFC! It's something amazing," declared the national fighter, who didn't hesitate to send a message to his loved ones: "Family, I promised it, and now I'm in the big leagues. I'm very happy because I achieved it. This is a goal; my dream is to be a champion," stated Borjas after announcing his affiliation with the prestigious mixed martial arts company.
